MAKE BETTER MUSIC, FASTER

Hard-won lessons from the AI music community โ€” from your first prompt to your first release.

๐ŸŸขFOR BEGINNERS
01
Start with Suno, explore with Udio

Suno is the best starting point โ€” it generates complete songs with vocals from a single text prompt in under 30 seconds. Once you're comfortable, try Udio for higher audio fidelity and more control over individual elements. Both have free tiers, so there's no reason not to try both.

02
Use Custom Mode from day one

Suno's Simple Mode is fine for experiments, but Custom Mode is where the real control lives. It lets you define your own lyrics, style, and song structure separately โ€” which is exactly how you get intentional music instead of random outputs. Switch to it early and never look back.

03
Your first prompt doesn't need to be perfect

Start simple to understand how the tool interprets your style preferences, then add specifics as you learn. Every generation teaches you something. Most creators find that their intuition for what works develops naturally after 10โ€“20 tracks.

04
Always generate two versions

Both Suno and Udio generate two versions of every prompt by default. Never skip this โ€” the second version is often dramatically different from the first. Listen to both before deciding, and use the better one as your starting point for further refinement.

โœ๏ธPROMPT CRAFT
05
The four-part prompt structure

Every strong AI music prompt has four components: genre, mood, instrumentation, and vocal preference. For example: "indie folk, melancholic and warm, fingerstyle guitar with soft strings, gentle male vocals." Hitting all four dramatically improves consistency. Too few descriptors gives generic output โ€” too many confuses the AI. Four to seven is the sweet spot.

06
Describe the feeling, not just the genre

AI music tools respond better to emotions and vibes than to music theory terminology. Instead of "lo-fi hip-hop at 90 BPM in C major," try "late night studying, rain on the window, warm lamp, a little melancholy but cozy." The emotional description gives the AI much richer context to work with.

07
Use decades to nail a sound

Specifying a decade sharpens your prompt dramatically. "80s synth-pop" produces a completely different result than "2020s synth-pop" โ€” even with identical other descriptors. The AI has learned the distinct production conventions of each era and applies them. This is one of the highest-leverage tricks in prompting.

08
Structure tags control your song layout

In Suno's lyrics field, use tags like [Verse], [Chorus], [Bridge], [Outro] and [Instrumental Break] to define your song's structure. Without them, the AI freestyles the arrangement and results are unpredictable. Adding [Instrumental Break] where you want a solo or breathing room is especially useful. Full guide โ†’

09
Want clearer vocals? Choose your genre carefully

Different genres have different mixing conventions baked into the AI's training. If vocal clarity is important to you, lean towards genres known for it: indie folk, acoustic pop, singer-songwriter, R&B. Genres with aggressive production โ€” metal, EDM, trap โ€” tend to bury vocals unless you're very specific with your prompting.

10
Blend genres for something original

Some of the most interesting AI tracks come from unexpected genre combinations. "Baroque pop with trap hi-hats," "country twang meets lo-fi hip-hop," "80s synth with flamenco guitar." The AI handles these crossovers surprisingly well, and the results are often far more distinctive than single-genre prompts.

๐ŸŽ›๏ธPRODUCTION & REFINEMENT
11
Use Remix to evolve, not restart

Suno's Remix feature lets you transform a track into a new genre without losing the melody or lyrics. Found a great folk track but want an EDM version? Remix it. This is one of the most underused features โ€” it saves you from burning credits re-generating from scratch whenever you want a variation.

12
Suno gives you one file โ€” use stem tools to go further

Suno exports a single stereo audio file with no stems. If you want to remix, isolate vocals, or import into a DAW like Ableton or Logic, you'll need a stem separation tool like LALAL.AI. It can separate vocals, drums, bass and instruments with impressive accuracy โ€” opening up your AI tracks for real production work.

13
Udio lets you download stems directly

Unlike Suno, Udio's Standard and Pro plans include stem downloads โ€” giving you individual tracks for vocals, drums, bass and more without needing a third-party separation tool. If you plan to seriously edit your AI music in a DAW, this feature alone might make Udio the better choice for your workflow.

14
Master before you release

AI-generated tracks often have inconsistent loudness compared to commercially mastered music. Streaming platforms like Spotify normalize volume, which can make unmastered tracks sound thin or quiet. A quick pass through an AI mastering tool brings your track up to professional loudness standards and adds the final polish listeners expect.

๐Ÿš€SHARING & RELEASING
15
Commercial rights require a paid plan

Both Suno and Udio allow personal use on their free plans, but commercial rights โ€” releasing on streaming platforms, using in ads, monetizing on YouTube โ€” require a paid subscription. Suno's Pro plan starts at $10/month, Udio's Standard at $10/month. Always check the platform's current terms before releasing publicly.

16
Disclose AI when sharing your music

Transparency is increasingly expected โ€” and in some cases required. When sharing AI-generated music on YouTube, include a note in your description like "This track was created using AI music tools." It builds trust with your audience and keeps you compliant as platform policies around AI disclosure continue to evolve.

17
Let the community judge blind

Clout bias is real โ€” even in AI music. A track by a famous creator gets more attention not because it's better, but because of who made it. Submit your tracks to VoteMyAI for blind ratings where the music speaks entirely for itself. You might be surprised which of your tracks actually connects with listeners.

18
Build a release workflow and stick to it

Generate โ†’ Refine stems โ†’ Master โ†’ Distribute. Having a consistent workflow means you spend less time figuring out your process on every track and more time creating. The best creators treat their AI music setup like a production pipeline โ€” repeatable, efficient, and always moving forward.
